March is MS Awareness Month!
March 8, 2018
We are asking for your help to raise awareness and support those we know, living with MS. The color of MS Hope is ORANGE! Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system, for which there is no cure. MS interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and the rest of the body. Thanks to growing collaboration; however, there are improved treatments leading to enhanced quality of life for people living with MS. MS is a destroyer of connection. But it’s possible to build connections with each other that MS cannot destroy.
Our connections raise questions, find answers, bring knowledge and provide hope.
Every connection we make is a small victory!

December is National Coding Month
Computer coding is everywhere! More a part of our daily lives and our devices that many of us can even fathom, the "magic" in our machines comes thanks to dedicated computer programmers and their coding skills. The demand for coding is only growing. When students learn to code, they develop skills such as problem-solving, logic and sequencing, trouble-shooting, technology fluency, and more!
We started coding this week by signing into Code.org. It is a great website that is kid friendly and great for partner or individual work. The kids practiced working in pairs, with one student being the “navigator” and the other the “driver.” They worked together to get to certain destinations on a map.
The students also coded with pencil-paper by designing a gingerbread trail. They had enemies to jump and treats to collect. The coder then had to draw the map only with arrows of turn by turn directions without getting stuck. They love the challenge!
The kids watched this video today and started coding.

Pumpkin Play
The scripts are going home Wednesday with your child’s part in the play! Please practice your child’s nursery rhyme and play parts with them as much as possible during October. Even when they think they know them, a performance can still be daunting. The more confident they feel with their lines, the smoother the play will go. Their Nursery Rhyme will be performed first, and then the Pumpkin Play performance. They can bring both their costumes the morning of the play and they will put them on in the afternoon.
Thanks for all your support in this!

Today we were really exploring what it means to "Count On." The students were each given an "Apple Tree" with a different number and how to count on a certain number of apples, label them and then write a complete number sentence.

I need to share with you our wonderful first encounter with Science this year. First we discussed all the future careers that are Scientists! The kids were excited to learn about Paleontologists, Entomologists, Marine Biologists, Astronomers and more. Of course, official science business requires official business wear: Lab coats! Then we discussed the senses a scientist needs to use to study the world around us:

Sight Smell Hearing Touch Taste
Then, I gave them cups with an "unknown" substance inside. They investigated what could be inside. They disagreed about what it smelled like. Some said, "water", "Sprite" or "the cleaner my mom uses." So the general consensus was that it was best not to taste it. (good idea, i told them) Then, I said that it was safe to touch. Each team chose one person to touch the substance. Inside was a water bead! They were so surprised that they had no idea. Truly a memorable Scientific day!
Friday Sept. 2nd 2016
We completed our number crowns today. The kids practiced ordering numbers 1-20. They learned that numbers in the teens "start with a 1" because there is a group of tens in front of the number. I was so impressed with their numbering skills. We will continue to work on number and letter reversals. Aren't they cute?!? |
Thursday Sept. 1st 2016
Each morning during "Morning Meeting," the students are beaming with anticipation for Razzle Dazzle. The Razzle Dazzle student of the day is discovered by revealing one letter of a name at a time, beginning with the first letter. Then the Razzle Dazzle student is invited to the front of the room to practice pointing using correct concepts of print and tracking sight words. This helps the students practice "Pocket Chart" for when independent Literacy centers begin, in a couple weeks. We are also reviewing letter sounds within beginnings and endings of words and practicing our rules and routines. They are catching on quickly!! |

The students are staying busy with Math. We are writing our numbers 0-20. We are finding sums that make a number (i.e. 0+2=2, 1+1=2, 0+2=2) and discussing the commutative property.
We have been creating and analyzing data through graphing. The students are very proud to of their graphs. (i.e. brothers/sisters venn, eye color graph and boys/girls in the class)

Happy Grinch Day to all. The kids had a very "green" day celebration. Watch the video for a glimpse into their festivities. They made Grinch dust to sprinkle of their lawn(made with joy and love), thought of people and things that bring them Joy, this time of year and thought of ways to make others happy!

They had to use a metal water bottle to create sound, determine how to make sound from rubber bands on a cup and find out what a stethoscope can hear. They loved hearing the sound of their own hearts!!! It was precious. Then they had to determine how the sounds got to their ears: in waves.

The kids watched this video today and started coding.
The kids were eager to get started on their own coding adventure, joining the millions of the other students this week celebrating, the "Hour of Code. They started with Daisy the Dino and Kodable. The expressions of their faces were priceless to watch them "code" their way to success through levels.
These are the apps the students are using to begin coding.

We have been practicing fact families as much as we can. Here is the class using the Mimio interactive projector to show what they know and a Santa fact family game. They were to drop two counters and then add them together. With the three numbers, they created four number sentences to make the "famillies." They really enjoyed this game!

We are really focusing on compare and contrast in Reading. We have been reading each version of the Gingerbread Man and comparing characters, refrain and ending. We are also concentrating on determining main idea and important vocabulary words. We also conducted a science experiment to determine what really would have happened if the gingerbread man got wet.

Please send back pink blog permission slips as soon as possible so I can start adding more "evidence" of our work :)
Math
Our warm-ups everyday are word problems with addition, subtraction and 3 addends.
We have begun working on addition and subtraction problems with a missing number.
6 + _ = 9
10 - _ = 4
We continue to work on Fact fluency with sums and differences under 10. You can use flash cards, apps, or even verbal quizzing aloud during car rides for practice. Remember, if they can answer the fact in less than 5 seconds, it is fluent.

Santa delievered us an elf to help remember the Christmas spirit! Each day he writes the kids a new letter with ideas to help others. This weeks was offering compliments to each other. The kids named him "Chris Mystery" (so unique! :) Say it aloud and you'll understand why I loved it as much as they did. Good job firsties!!!

I need every family signed up as quickly as possible.
Math
We have been practicing our addition skills with three addends. This is included in their homework this week. All you need is three dice and two different markers for the game board. You can even use cereal.
We are working on related facts. The students are creating addition facts to better help them solve and check their work in subtraction.
i.e. 10 – 6 = __
__ + 6 = 10
From here we will be creating fact families with three numbers.
i.e. 4, 6, and 10
4 + 6 = 10 6 +4 = 10
10 - 6 = 4 10 – 4 =6
Slippers
I realize packing shoes to wear in the classroom takes up a lot of backpack room and it is difficult to remember everyday. Further, the kids get very uncomfortable wearing snow boots all day. The students are welcome to bring a pair of slippers to school to wear. They can leave the slippers in the classroom so they are always ready. I do ask that the slippers have a hard bottom so that the kids' feet are protected from sharp objects (like staples) that could be on the floor. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Also, on Tuesday they will still need to bring a pair of tennis shoes for P.E.

We listened to the Lorax as a read aloud in the app store. The kids loved the moving pictures and sound effects. Then, we discussed how we could protect and help the Earth. The kids colored "Earth" on a coffee filter with markers. When it was sprayed with water for a more fluid effect. We added our writing sample on at the end of the week.

Technology has brought spelling to a whole new level for these firsties. Our classroom now has 2 Osmo's for the kids to use during Literacy Centers. I created a lesson on Long a words that they can use. Be the first to guess and spell out the on‑screen hidden word by tossing down real‑life letters faster than your friends. A related picture gives the clue. The Osmo apps have brought real life learning beyond the screen. Watch the video to get a glimpse!

In the afternoon, we began exploring the end of our Reading unit, Earth's Treasures. The kids and their buddies used the free app Popplet to create a word web of their answers about what natural resources are used for. They had to connect the "popples" appropriately and they could add text and pictures. SOme even went as far as changing the colors to better help sort their thoughts. I only gave them the center Popple "Earth's Treasures" and told them, "Go!" Check it out!

We are working on sorting out the difference between long and short vowels. The students used the QR Reader app to scan a code and a picture pops up. They had to record the word on their recording sheet. Then, they had to identify the vowel they could hear. Then, they had to decide whether it was long or short. This answer told them which picture to look for when roaming to room for their next scan. The "end" of the QR Hunt takes them back to the beginning, so they can tell they are finished.

Well, we jumped into an inquiry project today: Lego Film Making with the free app Lego Movie Maker. The students are reading about Earth's natural resources at morning meeting and at small reading group time. Each small group was assigned a Natural Resource: air, water, soil, plants or animals. From there, they had to complete a paper identifying why the resource was important and it's uses. They were then to create a scene displaying their natural resource with Legos. Then they had to start filming. They took a series of pictures within the app, moving the characters for each shot. Then they went back though each frame and added sound. They could use sound effects or their voices. Their film had to include the need for their natural resource and it's uses. They were so proud when they finished!

In Writers Workshop last week, the students were able to brainstorm something they knew a lot about. I modeled facts about the moon, then they wrote all the facts they could think of about their choice of a topic. Some chose a friend, others chose an animal, but the most popular was sports. Then we came to the carpet so they could share their reading with others. As they finished, they call on two people for compliments about their details, structure or great ideas! Good writing firsties!

We have been reading and discussing "Earth's Treasures." At first, the sweet kiddos thought this meant gold and treasures. Through reading and discussion, they have determined it means Earth's natural resources. The Unit covers air, animals, plants, soil, and water. We have discussed why we need each resource and ways to conserve them. They have been hi-lighting words in their journal as they read about each new resource. They were more than thrilled to learn the uses of plants, especially about cotton! Different kinds of rocks were very intriguing for them. They learned about Limestone, pumice, granite, and marble.

Today was the 100th Day of School! The kids were so excited to come in with their capes on as superheroes! We sang about "Zero the Hero" by Jack Hartmann. Thanks for all your support in this. We practiced counting by tens, and ones to one hundred. We counted how many times we could sing the ABC's in 100 seconds. This was a hoot to listen to! The kiddos also did a great job creating words with "ONE HUNDRED." They had to come up with 2,3, and 4 letter words they could make with those letters. Here is a snapshot of our day, crowns and all. Hooray for the 100th Day!

Math: Today, we practiced Place Value with a little help from "Teacher Tipster" on YouTube. He is hilarious!. We sang one of the songs to help remind us that "tens are tall and ones are small."
Then, we set out to practice his theory by creating a real life Place Value Challenge. They had to use themselves to create the appropriate number of tens and ones. |
Throughout our exploration of Unit 3: In My Neighborhood, the students have learned about jobs and types of communities. The kiddos loved taking pictures of text evidence of places to go in communities. Then, they use a QR reader app to scan into a Padlet. The Padlet is what we use to collaborate and share our information.
When all their information is scanned in Padlet, we get this:

Dear Parents,
The Eagle Cliffs Family Fun Carnival is just around the corner. Every classroom has signed up to create a themed basket and this year our room is creating a “Griz” basket. Any University of Montana (Grizzlies) items would be appreciated. Cash donations would also be welcome. In order to have our basket completed in time for the carnival, we are asking that all donated items be in by Thurs. February 12th.
Thank you for taking the time to help our classroom and school make the carnival a success!
Math
Well, 3rd Quarter is well under way. We are beginning working with Place Value using “tens” and ones." The students are learning to compose a “ten” and that teen numbers are composed of a “ten” and a certain number of “ones.”
i. e. 12 = 1 ten and 2 ones
We are also practicing reading and writing our numbers through 120. Students will need to be able to count to 120 from any given number under 120.

Grinch day! I forgot to post all their wonderful pictures when we learned the true meaning of Christmas. I apologize for some of them being "sideways"
